I want to BEET you UP!

Let’s talk beets, those fabulous little red things that stain everything they touch haha.

Why do I love beats so much? Let me tell you.

Beets

Beets are known to lower blood pressure (study from queens university – London)

One glass of beet juice daily is more effective at lowering blood pressure than medication! Adding a cup of beet juice or more beets in general to your diet could help prevent angina, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Let’s talk endurance – England’s university of Exeter study found eating foods high in naturally occurring nitrates, like beets, improved endurance. Naturally occurring nitrates have been shown to widen blood vessels and allow more oxygen-rich blood to travel to the heart.

Anti – inflammatory – Raw beets, not cooked, contain betaine, a natural anti-inflammatory. This helps prevent aging and disease.

Anti-cancer effects – Beets contain a phytonutrient called proanthocyanidin. This gives beets their rich purplish colour and is also a potent anti cancer compound.  The fiber found in beets also helps protect against cancer as this particular the of finer increases the body’s ability to not only detect but also remove abnormal cells before they have a chance to turn cancerous.  Read Study here.

Immune booster– Beet are high in Vit C, the best source is a naturally occurring one, not the synthetic toxic version we see on many store shelves.

Reduces the risk of birth defects– Beets are high in folate (a B- complex vitamin) which is necessary for pregnant women to consume in order to prevent a number of birth defects.

Rich in essential minerals – We are all lacking in many minerals in our diets. Beets happen to be high in Manganese, which is needed for healthy bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. They are also high in potassium which among other things helps ensure healthy nerve and muscle function.

Recipe suggestions

Juicing is always my favorite and the easiest way. You get a ton of nutrients just make sure you clean that juicer right away, beets stain EVERYTHING!

Slice them or grate them into any salad for a little colour and some great flavour

Try lightly steaming them and toss with a little flax seed oil or hemp seed oil (for omega 3) and a little sea salt.
