So what is a GE food? A Genetically Modified Organism or GMO is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish and mammals. Great now that we know what it is how do we avoid it?
I mean this stuff is everywhere and hidden so we don’t always know we are consuming it. I look for the “Non-GMO project verified” seal http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/understanding-our-seal/
So how do we guard against them if we consume some? We will likely consume something containing GMO’s at some point but that’s ok, here are some tips to help detox.
Increase your fibre. You always want to be eliminating heavy metals, toxins from GM food and pesticides along with extra food additives. When you eat plenty of fibre, which can be found in plants and an occasional detox with psyllium husk you remove a lot of the bad stuff. Most of us are not getting even the minimum recommended dose of fibre in our diets.
*Pysillium husk turn into a sort of gel like substance that when you mix with plenty of water will help to flush out the digestive tract taking all those nasty toxins with it. Always buy organic psyllium which can be found at any local health food store.
Probiotics and fermented foods When you eat fermented foods, consume fermented beverages like kombucha and take a probiotic you help your body have a healthy gut. When your gut bacteria is healthy it is able to break down and eliminate harmful substances in your diet, one of which being Bt-toxin found in GMO crops.
Wheatgrass This is a staple in my home for many reasons, it requires an article on it’s own! This is a powerful tool to keep you healthy and detoxed of toxins.
Organic Sulphur Some experts recommend this as a must have for detoxing the liver. I also recommend beets (check out my beet juice recipe). Organic sulphur, also known as MSM is a critical component in detoxification, energy production, cell oxygenation and immune capacity. While it used to be found in our food supply it has dwindled but with sprouts you will find the nutrient levels restored.
We always buy non GMO seeds for planting and sprouting, we buy certified and we read the labels. Knowing which foods are the highest crops of gm and eliminating them from your diet will help a ton. Corn is one of the largest crops as is soy so try to stay clear of those unless you see certified label.
