What the heck is jaggery? well it’s a substitute for sugar in many traditional drinks, but is it really a healthy alternative to sugar?
Organic jaggery has trace minerals that aren’t found in sugar, such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and calcium. A small amount is all you need, sort of like stevia, it’s pretty potent. But trace amounts doesn’t exactly meet the daily recommended value so don’t go loading up on this sugar please.
There are however no harsh chemicals used in the processing of jaggery, it is simply boiled whereas refined sugar uses chemicals to clarify the cane sugar juice syrup.I guess this makes it a better alternative.
Organic jaggery is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides plus if you are sure to purchase the right type (I like Pure Indian Foods organic jaggery) it will be free of the lead contamination that is sometimes found in the imported jagger, so be sure to do your research. I usually grab it in brick form then just use a cheese grater!
Organic jaggery also known as panela in South Africa and Mexico, or Gur in India, it varies in colour from yellow to dark brown.
So back to my original question, is it actually healthier? My feelings are that all sugar is toxic, even healthy honey has it’s downside. Is it better than traditional white refined sugar? Yes, you get less of the toxic load and that is always a good thing.
