Could Glutathione be a modern day Fountain of Youth?

Could Glutathione be a modern day Fountain of Youth?

Having a hard time differentiating between anti oxidants, superfoods and all the other health terms floating around? I try to focus on the big ones in order of importance, add one to your diet every week and before you know it you will be a wealth of knowledge and health. Now I know all you gym buffs out there have heard of glutathione (GSH) but did you know it just so happens to be one of the most important antioxidants on the list? It’s one of the rare ones that the body produces on it’s own. We create this molecule in the liver and seeing as it is required by every cell in our bodies if we are deficient in it we won’t be able to properly utilize other antioxidants (such as vitamin C and E).  So what does it do exactly? It’s known to be one of the master anti-oxidants as well as a detoxifier. It attacks free radicals (those are the bad guys) and is able to prevent cellular inflammation from happening. This is one awesome antioxidant enzyme! Inflammation has been linked to many diseases so getting that under control is key to good health and antiaging. Since the liver, where GSH is produced, has to be detoxifying the body 24/7 – with no breaks, we want to make sure there is plenty of GSH around otherwise the liver can’t function properly. We want want to rid your bodies of the bad guys  such as environmental toxins, drugs, heavy metals like mercury etc. GSH does this while also ridding the body of harmful bacteria, viruses and of course the aforementioned free radicals....
Vegan Substitution Guide for Your Favorite Recipes.

Vegan Substitution Guide for Your Favorite Recipes.

MILK – It’s easy to substitute cows milk in a recipe. Rice milk, oat milk, or nut milk is measure for measure, you can try hemp milk for a nutty flavor or use coconut for the creamy texture.  I personally stay away from soy milk as it is toxic. When buying store versions (making your own is easy) always check the label for added sugar and casein.  If you are looking to mimic buttermilk put either 1 tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar in your measuring cup and then add the milk substitute of choice. I find rice milk works well for this but play around till you get the one you like. CHEESE-  If you are buying a vegetarian cheese I would stay away from those containing casein, which is toxic and also not vegan. I would also be leary of cheeses made from tofu as unfermented soy is toxic. There are many easy recipes for things such as cashew cheese that will be a healthier alternative. EGGS –  In baked goods a good substitute is applesauce, a flax egg (1 tbsp of flax seeds plus 3 tbsp water or other liquid, blended). In dishes where you use eggs for binding like quinoa patties you can use oat flour, rolled oats, cooked oatmeal, bread crumbs, nut butters, tomato paste or cornstarch. For glazing pie crust or phyllo dough with egg wash I just use whichever milk substitute I prefer or have on hand. YOGURT – My personal favorite is coconut yogurt, it’s easy to make or you can find it at your local health food store. SOUR CREAM – Try just using...

How to detox from GMO’s

How to detox from GMO’s

The buzz surrounding GMO’s or GE foods is getting louder and louder but with no real labeling laws in place for most of us it can be a confusing term. So what is a GE food? A Genetically Modified Organism or GMO is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish and mammals. Great now that we know what it is how do we avoid it?  I mean this stuff is everywhere and hidden so we don’t always know we are consuming it.  I look for the “Non-GMO project verified” seal  http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/understanding-our-seal/ So how do we guard against them if we consume some? We will likely consume something containing GMO’s at some point but that’s ok, here are some tips to help detox. Increase your fibre. You always want to be eliminating heavy metals, toxins from GM food and pesticides along with extra food additives. When you eat plenty of fibre, which can be found in plants and an occasional detox with psyllium husk you remove a lot of the bad stuff. Most of us are not getting even the minimum recommended dose of fibre in our diets. *Pysillium husk turn into a sort of gel like substance that when you mix with plenty of water will help to flush out the digestive tract taking all those nasty toxins with it. Always buy organic psyllium which can be found at any local health food store. Probiotics and fermented foods  When you eat fermented foods, consume fermented beverages like kombucha and take a...
